Ingredients

1 cup shortening2 cups packed brown sugar1 teaspoon baking soda2 tablespoons warm water3 eggs1 cup flaked coconut1 cup rolled oats1 cup chopped dates½ cup chopped walnuts2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C).Dissolve the baking soda in the warm water. Cream the shortening with the brown sugar until light. Stir in the eggs, baking soda mixture, coconut, oatmeal, dates or raisins, nuts and flour. Mix until combined. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets.Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 8 to 10 minutes.
